Every year, lakhs of students in West Bengal appear for their secondary and higher secondary board examinations. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) conducts the Class 10 Madhyamik exams, while the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) conducts the Class 12 Higher Secondary (Uccha Madhyamik) exams. Both boards use a structured 7-point grading system along with total aggregate marks to evaluate student performance.
How Madhyamik (Class 10) Marks Are Calculated
In WBBSE Madhyamik exams, students are evaluated across 7 compulsory subjects, each carrying 100 marks. These subjects include:
- First Language (Bengali / English / Hindi / Urdu)
- Second Language (English / Bengali)
- Mathematics
- Physical Science
- Life Science
- History
- Geography
The total marks are calculated out of 700. To pass the examination, a student must secure at least 25 marks (25%) in each subject (written exam plus internal assignment) as well as an aggregate score of 25% or above.
How the Higher Secondary (Class 12) “Top-of-5” Rule Works
For WBCHSE Higher Secondary (Class 12) students, the mark sheet calculation is slightly different from Class 10. Most students appear for 6 subjects in total (Two Language papers plus Four Elective subjects).
Under the official WBCHSE guidelines, the final percentage and division are calculated based on the Top 5 highest scoring subjects. The subject in which you score the lowest marks among the electives is treated as an optional/additional paper and is not added to your final grand total. Hence, the overall percentage for Class 12 is calculated out of 500 marks instead of 600.
Division Benchmarks for College Admissions and Jobs
In West Bengal, divisions play a major role during higher secondary stream allocation and college degree admissions:
- First Division (60% and above / 420+ in Madhyamik, 300+ in HS): Necessary for top Science and Commerce stream admissions in Kolkata and district schools.
- Second Division (45% to 59.9%): Qualifies students for general stream courses, Arts electives, and vocational training programs.
- Third Division (35% to 44.9%): Eligible for standard pass degree courses and diploma admissions.
What is the minimum passing mark in WBBSE Madhyamik?
A student must score a minimum of 25% marks in each subject and 25% in total aggregate (at least 175 out of 700) to clear the Madhyamik examination.
Is internal assessment included in the final marks?
Yes. The final 100 marks per subject are composed of 90 marks for the written board examination and 10 marks for internal formative evaluation conducted by the school.
